We all saw it coming, so when it took place in recent weeks, we weren't really that surprised. Following his exit from office and the recent sex scandal, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife are now officially in the midst of a divorce.

Maria Shriver filed her divorce petition on July 1 in Los Angeles Superior Court, initiating the process that will put an end to her 25-year marriage with the Terminator, citing "irreconcilable differences."

Shriver will reportedly be seeking joint legal and physical custody of their two children, 17-year-old Patrick and 13-year-old Christopher. Maria and Arnold also have two adult children. There is no prenuptial agreement at issue, so property will-as far as can be told at this time-be distributed according to standard community property laws. As we have previously noted on this blog, up to $400 million is at stake in the proceeding, and .....

Because California is a community property state, any property co-owned by both Schwarzenegger and Shriver will be divided equally between them. Community property encompasses money earned or acquired during the course of the marriage and co-owned by both parties. Money that has been given to one party through gift or inheritance is not considered community property, as long as it remains solely in that party's name.

Shriver's divorce filing comes within a couple months of her announcement that her and Schwarzenegger would be separating to "decide on the future of their relationship." That decision came after the scandal of Schwarzenegger's affair with the couple's long time housekeeper broke loose.
