Should parents lose custody of their children because of the names they give them? If so, what kind of criteria is there for when courts can intervene? What if a parent gives their children names like "Adolf Hitler" and "Aryan Nation?" Is that grounds for removing the children from custody?
Those were the names to two children belonging to a New Jersey couple that recently lost custody of all three of their children. The children were taken from the couple despite the reported lack of evidence of abuse. According to a New Jersey Appeals court, the children have been taken away from the couple without cause.
The couple has reportedly protested the state's removal of their children, which took place after a local ShopRite refused to decorate of birthday cake for the couple's son, Adolf Hitler Campbell and reported the incident to child protective services. Adolf and his sisters, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie were shortly after taken to foster care, and have been there since.
The couple protests that their son is not being abused and that the intention behind naming him was not to spread hate. They say they have the right to name their children whatever they wish.
Sources said that the children were removed from the parents' home last year because of domestic violence in the home, despite the lack of evidence of child abuse. The court apparently felt it was not in the children's best interest to live in that kind of environment.
A judge will reportedly be making a custody decision in the case by early December.
